Both entomology and the larger global community are faced with a gripping number of challenges coming to a head at the same time: climate change, increasing vector-borne disease, how to sustainably feed a growing world’s population, and the looming challenges caused by increasing biodiversity loss. ESA and the Royal Entomological Society have both proposed a set of Grand Challenges to address the intersection of arthropods and human suffering but to influence policy change on a national and international scale, a balance needs to be struck between conveying the very real threats posed by inaction with stories of success which can provide hope and inspiration.
