South American Palm Weevil (SAPW) (Rhynchophorus palmarum) established in the United States of America in 2014 and since then has contributed to the death of over 20,000 palm trees across San Diego County, California. The standard treatment for protecting susceptible palms involves multiple canopy sprays a year, and can be impractical in certain situations. Rainbow Ecoscience worked with University of California, Riverside in 2018 and conducted a research trial over three years in an area with high insect pressure to evaluate alternative chemical control methods to reduce the need for crown sprays. This talk will address results from that study and ongoing research efforts to expand chemical control options for this insect.
