A three decade trend on cranberry IPM research

The American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton) is an ericaceous crop that is mainly grown across its native regions in North America and that has recently expanded its production worldwide. This crop is unique because it is grown in “bogs” characterized by acidic soils. As the production and globalization of cranberries increases, there has been a growing interest in developing alternative insect pest management tactics to chemical control. Here, we conducted a literature synthesis of peer-reviewed published papers related to cranberry IPM to identify trends in the past three decades. We found that the number of studies on monitoring/decision making tactics, as well as host-plant resistance tactics, have increased, while other areas of research like chemical control have decreased. It is also evident that the USA and Canada have the highest cranberry production rates in the world, with a few key states and provinces contributing the most to both production and IPM research, such as Wisconsin, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and British Columbia. Furthermore, among the researched insect pests, the three most studied insect pests of cranberries for the last three decades were Sparganothis fruitworm (Sparganothis sulfureana), cranberry fruitworm (Acrobasis vaccinii), and blackheaded fireworm (Rhopobota naevana). This literature synthesis highlights the most researched areas on cranberry insect IPM and identifies potential gaps for future research.
