2nd Place: Seeing what’s not there: 3D printing as a tool to improve invasive species detection and identification

Spotted lanternfly (SLF) is a significant invasive pest moving westward from Northeastern US. Accurate identification of SLF is critical to directing management efforts and slowing this spread through the US. In OH, we have low infestation levels, which makes training for SLF scouting difficult. However, 3D printing can be paired with identification training to improve our ability to detect and scout invasive species, like SLF. In 2022, we printed 3D models of SLF egg masses that mimic the real pest and placed them in wooded areas where they will most likely be encountered. We developed an extension presentation with a hands-on “mock scouting” activity to detect Spotted Lanternfly egg masses. Surveys were conducted both before and after the training activities to determine the efficacy of this approach. Our preliminary results reveal that this training was successful, and participants reported a 71% increase in their ability to positively identify SLF egg masses. Further, 93% of participants found this activity useful and enjoyable. Our data suggest that this approach improves the training experience by adding a hands-on activity to a formal presentation. Through this, participants are engaged, and valuable information can be obtained about the impact of the training.3D printing has proven to be a valuable extension tool that has helped us enhance our training sessions.
