Terrestrial animals emerged into a world inhabited by microbes and were themselves shaped by the microbes inhabiting their tissues. Linking microbial species and/or functions to host phenotypes provides insights into how the former have contributed to macrobial biodiversity. Model organisms are essential in this effort and we have developed the Periplaneta americana cockroach as an ideal platform for detailing how species-rich microbial communities contribute to their host’s growth and development.
