Peptides as new tools for resistance management in diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella L.) and other lepidopterans

Discovery of peptide-actives that bind to novel binding sites on known receptors has opened possibilities to disrupt well-established neuromuscular pathways in insect pests with novel modes of action that decrease the risk of resistance development. The first two peptide-insecticides from Vestaron Corporation, SPEAR^® (GS-omega/kappa-Hxtx-Hv1a -peptide) and BASIN^® (U1-AGTX-Ta1b-QA -peptide), target different binding sites on the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) and thereby provide new modes of action for the management of diverse lepidopteran pests in a broad range of field and orchard crops. To facilitate the absorption of large peptides through insect gut, a gut disruptor such as Btk or Bta is applied with the peptide product for improved bioavailability and efficacy via ingestion. Results from recent field trials against Diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella, L.) in the US and Mexico demonstrate the peptide-insecticides’ efficacy and utility as standalone treatments or as rotation partners with conventional insecticides for season-long control programs.
