Ebeling et al. (1966) investigated insecticide repellency against cockroaches using choice boxes. A choice box is made of wood with two compartments (light and dark). The light compartment was covered with Plexiglas, allowing light to enter from above, and it also had screens in the walls to allow ventilation. On the other hand, the dark compartment was covered with a board to keep the light out. Food and water were provided in the light compartment, while the insecticides were applied/or placed in the dark compartment. In this study, we described how we use the Ebeling choice box to predict insecticide performance in insecticide-resistant German cockroaches. We use the Performance Index (PI) (Rust & Reierson 1978) to determine the effectiveness of each insecticide product evaluated.
