Spotted-wing drosophila (SWD), Drosophila suzukii, is an invasive pest of small fruits and cherries. This pest is often controlled by pesticides but growers have requested alternatives to stop the “pesticide treadmill”. With permission to release the imported parasitoid Ganaspsis brasiliensis, a nationwide effort is underway to get this parasitoid established in farms. The SWD Areawide Project includes releases of this parasitoid on four large acreage sites in Washington cherries, Oregon blueberries, and California caneberries. Release sites are compared to four similar control sites managed by the grower standard. In each site, 25 sampling stations are monitored for adult SWD activity, fruit infestation, and parasitism on sentinel traps and infested fruit. We will assess whether SWD adult activity and fruit infestation differs between release and control sites, and where Ganaspis brasiliensis parasitized hosts in a large landscape following release.
