Recently Retired Program Manager Oregon Department of Agriculture Salem, Oregon
In 2013 and 2014, ODA documented several bumble bee kills related to use of dinotefuran or imidacloprid on linden trees (Tilia spp); mostly impacting Bombus vosnesneskii. Applications were made at different times of the year and using a variety of application methods.
ODA worked closely with the US EPA. In 2013, EPA notified registrants of neonicotinoids with foliar outdoor use directions, of required label changes. ODA adopted two temporary rules, and in 2015 adopted a permanent rule prohibiting use of dinotefuran, imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, or clothianidin, regardless of application method, to Tilia spp.
The Oregon legislature established a Task Force on Pollinator Health, and directed Oregon State University (OSU) to develop educational materials, in consultation with ODA.
OSU hired a Pollinator Health Extension faculty member, and ODA modified licensing requirements for pesticide applicators. OSU and ODA worked with stakeholders to develop pollinator protection plans, these plans are part of national effort.
