Abstract: Abstract
Evidence based practice is a lifelong approach to solving clinical issues that can easily implemented in practice areas by the following ten simple steps.
One: Keep a log of evidence of current problems identified from patient dashboards reports, quality improvement events, patient assessment, patient preferences and values, medical records, issues of interest to you (internal).
Two: Decide if you/colleague have/has the clinical experience/exposure to tackle the problem.
Three: Write the clinical question with keywords.
Four: Work with your librarian or learn to search databases for level I through VII articles in the peer reviewed literature.
Five: Read methods, results, discussion to decide if solutions/recommendations provided by authors of the articles are useful, valid, and reliable.
Six: Extract solutions/recommendations made by authors of appraised articles to solve problem identified in practice. Evaluate these solutions/recommendations with the FINERE criteria (Feasible, Innovative, New, Ethical, Relevant and Economical).
Seven: Identify a model to guide implementation of solution/recommendations, example is the Iowa model (Melnyk & Overholt). Go through steps to implement solutions/recommendations in specific clinical area.
Eight: Evaluate if solution/recommendations worked by identifying if outcome/results were reached or will be reached in future time.
Nine: Write how do you know whether solution/intervention worked or not.
Ten: If solution/recommendation didn’t work, assess why not. If solutions/recommendations worked, identify why did it work and present this information to your colleagues so it can be sustained.
Finally, Identify one clinical issue, work through the sample issue through the ten simple steps, summarize participants learning/feedback about ten-steps approach.
