Cameron Peak Post Fire Restoration

This will be a case study showing post fire restoration efforts after the Cameron Peak Fire that occurred in Colorado at the end of 2020. Erosion and sediment control practices and products will be discussed with supporting photos, videos, and data. The Cameron Peak Fire of 2020 was the largest wildfire in Colorado history. The watersheds affected have concerns over water quality as they provide drinking water to a large urban area (Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland, etc).

Proper installation of the right tools for the job is key when it comes to such a serious matter. Chuck Herrmann with Stantec and his team identified and mapped key areas that needed attention for erosion and sediment control to ensure roadways and waterways would be protected from future damage being done.

Sediment logs, aka filter socks, (sometimes referred to as wattles) are being delivered routinely and installed as quickly as possible. The teams that handle the installation of said products are working 10 hour days and camping near the job sites to ensure their time is well spent. This will be an ongoing project as it's impossible to predict the weather and results of future storm events. Post fire restoration is something that will continue to evolve as best managed practices become more readily available and understood.

The Larimer County Emergency Response Team, Stantec, and Silt Sock Inc. continue to work together to address the areas of highest importance.
