This presentation on the basics of proper Best Management Practices (BMPs) installation will look at some of the industry’s most common BMPs. We will explore both erosion control BMPs and sediment control BMPs. This presentation will reference BMP standards from a non-profit organization in Texas, dedicated to helping our industry. The name of the organization is the North Central Texas Council of Governments or NCTCOG. The mission statement on their website is “We are an association of, for, and by local governments. We assist our members in planning for common needs, cooperating for mutual benefit, and recognizing regional opportunities for improving the quality of life in North Central Texas.” They deal with everything in the community, including, aging services, economic development, environment and development, public safety, and transportation. For this presentation, I am mainly referencing NCTCOG’s iSWM Criteria Manual for Site Development and Construction, iSWM’s Technical Manual – Construction Controls, and the addendum document that goes with the Technical Manual. The erosion control BMPs that we will explore the proper installation of are erosion control blankets (ECBs), turf reinforcement matts (TRMs), and vegetation. The sediment controls that we will explore the proper installation of are silt fence (SF), inlet protection (IP), and stabilized construction entrance/exit (CE). The hope of the instructor is that each participant will walk away with some knowledge of not only how to properly install a specific BMP, but also how to inspect that BMP when doing construction stormwater inspections. While this presentation is classified as basic, anyone is welcome to attend, even those most seasoned stormwater professionals.
