Professor of Medicine
University of Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh, PA, United States
Dr Nguyen is Professor of Medicine and Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and co-Director of the Center for Healthcare Mycology at the University of Pittsburgh, and Director of Transplant Infectious Diseases (TID) and Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). Her longstanding research interests are in epidemiology of invasive fungal infections; antifungal drug resistance and pharmacokinetics; non-culture diagnostics; Candida pathogenesis; and most recently fungal genomics. Her lab has active research projects investigating molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis, antifungal resistance among Candida spp., and evolution of Candida during human bloodstream infection. Her laboratory research has been continuously funded for >20 years by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and/or other sources to investigate molecular genetics of fungal pathogenesis and resistance. She currently has federal grant support to study epidemiology of aspergillosis complicating severe influenza (principal investigator, NIH) and COVID-19 (co-investigator, Mycosis Study Group), and genomic diversity of Candida bloodstream infection (principal investigator, NIH). She is also a recipient
of a CDC Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) for Applied Research to Address Emerging Public Health Priorities to evaluate the role of environment in hospital-acquired fungal infections. She has authored over 240 papers in the peer-reviewed literature on wide-ranging clinical, translational and basic research topics in infectious diseases. In 2021, she was among the 0.1% of world's scientists recognized by Clarivate Analytics as a Highly Cited Researcher, based on number of papers that rank in the top 1% of Web of Science citations by discipline.
