As the Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacist at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford (LPCHS) since 2016, Laura Bio, PharmD, BCPS, BCIDP, is responsible for daily stewardship activities and supporting the inpatient Pediatric Infectious Diseases consult service as a drug information expert. After graduating from Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, she completed an ASHP-accredited pharmacy practice residency at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, followed by a pediatric pharmacy practice specialty residency at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (PCP) at the University of the Sciences. As an Assistant Professor in Clinical Pediatric Pharmacy at PCP, she focused her teaching and research in infectious diseases and pharmacokinetics. At LPCHS, she elevated the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program to achieve programmatic recognition by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) as a Center of Excellence and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAI) with Gold Status. Dr. Bio has continued her research, with a focus on evaluating antimicrobial stewardship interventions through quality improvement projects, improving antimicrobial dosing regimens based on pharmacokinetics, and reducing patient exposure to unnecessary antimicrobials. Dr. Bio also serves as the pharmacy residency research mentor and preceptor of the infectious diseases’ rotation. She has played an integral role in the growth and development of LPCHS’s residents and will expand in this role as the Program Director of the Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency.
