Dr. Maria Acena Nagel is a Professor in the Department of Neurology and Ophthalmology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She received her B.A. in Biological Sciences from the University of Chicago, her M.D. from the University of Illinois, and subsequently completed a neurology residency and neurovirology postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Colorado. Aside from seeing patients with neurological disease caused by alphaherpesviruses and SARS-CoV-2, she directs a research lab focusing on neurotropic virus pathogenesis, the development of novel antiviral drugs, and, more recently, the intersection of infection, aging, and neurodegenerative disease. Her research has expanded the spectrum of intracranial VZV vasculopathy to extracranial manifestations, characterized mechanisms involving direct virus infection of arteries and indirect effects via pathogenic exosomes, and explored the biological plausibility of alphaherpesvirus contributions to dementia progression. Dr. Nagel has over 130 publications and is considered a world expert on VZV disease. She serves as Program Director of an NIA-funded Program Project on VZV pathogenesis, Co-Principal Investigator (PI) of a CU Innovations/Colorado Advanced Industry Accelerator SPARK award to commercialize a new antiviral drug against alphaherpesviruses, Co-PI of an Indo-U.S. Science and Technology Forum grant exploring anti-SARS-CoV-2 effects of Neem bark extract, and Co-PI of an FDA collaboration analyzing gene expression changes in hippocampus and hypothalamus of rodents across their lifespan.
