Infectious Diseases Physician

I am currently an Infectious Disease Physician at Rush University Medical Center/Stroger Hospital of Cook County. In the past fifteen years, I have focused my research on two major areas: (1) the epidemiology of community-associated methicillin-resistant S. aureus (CA-MRSA) and the disproportionate impact CA-MRSA has had on underserved populations and (2) the use of chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) for patient bathing in the intensive care unit (ICU). I was the PI for an NIAID R01 that used whole genome sequencing (WGS) and phylogenetic analysis to (1) define whether urban jails are non-hospital settings that are a controllable focus of MRSA and (2) determine how MRSA strains circulate between the community and urban jails. I am now the PI for a separate R01 using genomic sequencing and spatial modeling to better understand spread of MRSA in urban areas. Results of these projects will lead to epidemiologic-driven planning of interventions aimed at reducing MRSA. My work has helped me gain a deeper understanding of the importance of epidemiologists, especially critical now with the emergence of multidrug resistant pathogens, and has strengthened my commitment to do research in healthcare epidemiology and infection prevention.
I do not have any relevant financial / non-financial relationships with any proprietary interests.
