I am a physician-scientist, and I have dedicated my career to defining and characterizing the microbial determinants of clinical outcomes in children with diverse chronic diseases, including the genetic disease cystic fibrosis (CF). Clinically, I am a pediatric pulmonologist, and I care for children with CF and other chronic lung diseases. My research involves two different facilities: I maintain a basic research laboratory focused on the microbiology of CF and other pediatric diseases, including understanding how the interactions between microbes impacts disease course and response to therapy. I am also a CF clinical microbiologist; I direct the Seattle Children’s Hospital (SCH) CF clinical microbiology laboratory, and since 2015 I have served as Director of a National Resource Center supported by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Therapeutic Development Network (CF-TDN) dedicated to providing consultation and services regarding CF microbiological diagnosis and testing—the Center for CF Microbiology (CCFM). In 2018, I became Co-Director of the CFF-funded University of Washington (UW) CF Research Development Program and of its Host-Microbe Interaction Core, providing expertise and services to the CF research base at UW and SCH.
I do not have any relevant financial / non-financial relationships with any proprietary interests.
