Sanjay Desai is the Chief Academic Officer for the American Medical Association overseeing all Medical Education activities for the organization. Dr. Desai has depth and diversity of experience in academic medicine, clinical practice and health systems administration. His strategy focuses investment in innovation and research, technology- and data-enabled platforms, advocacy, accreditation standards, and public-private partnerships to address urgent challenges in the education and continuous professional development of physicians. He has a particular interest in leading advances in precision education and competency-based education.
Dr. Desai joined the AMA in October 2021 from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he was the Myron L. Weisfeldt Professor of Medicine, Director of the Osler Medical Residency, and Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Medicine. He is an accomplished clinician, researcher, educator, and administrator with appointments in Pulmonary and Critical Care, General Internal Medicine, as well as with the Carey School of Business. Dr. Desai continues as an active clinician caring for patients in the medical intensive care unit at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Before Hopkins, he was Director of the medical ICU at the Medstar Washington Hospital Center, the largest hospital in Washington D.C.
Dr. Desai has been widely recognized for his skills as an educator, including receiving the coveted C. Lockard Conley Award for Outstanding Educator from the Maryland ACP and the Johns Hopkins University Professors’ Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Desai focused his research on graduate medical education (GME), believing high-quality data are required to inform policy and practice. He chaired the Executive Committee of the iCOMPARE study group whose outcomes were published in a series of articles in the New England Journal of Medicine. This research influenced national policies by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
In his roles at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Desai was responsible for the operations of the largest single clinical service in the health system, including managing its changes during the pandemic. He also led all educational programming in the Department of Medicine for medical students, trainees and faculty. Dr. Desai built innovative programs to recruit, develop and retain physicians in global health, patient safety, physician science, medical education and health systems management. He has additionally developed training programs for physician in India and consulted on similar efforts in China.
Dr. Desai grew up in Baltimore, Maryland and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in bioengineering and a Bachelor of Economics from the Wharton School of Business in healthcare management. He earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed his residency and subspecialty fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, where is also served as a Chief Resident. Dr. Desai is also a senior advisor for McKinsey & Company, where he also worked as a consultant for variety of industries in the US and in Southeast Asia. Dr. Desai lives in Bethesda, Maryland with his wife and twin boys.
