Dr. Tristan McPherson received his medical degree at the University of Tennessee. He completed a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Infectious Diseases fellowship at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Following fellowship, he joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) and was assigned to the Chicago Department of Public Health’s Communicable Disease Program. During EIS, his work focused on applied epidemiology, disease surveillance, infection prevention/control in acute care hospitals and long-term care facilities, as well as outbreak response related to multidrug-resistant pathogens, vaccine-preventable diseases, legionellosis, and COVID-19. He was also a staff physician at Howard Brown Health, providing services for sexual health and HIV prevention and treatment. He is an active IDSA member having supported the Public Health Advisory Group and the Grants for Emerging Researchers/Clinicians Mentorship (G.E.R.M.) selection committee.
He joined New York University's Division of Infectious Diseases and Immunology as an Associate Hospital Epidemiologist and continues on faculty to support learners pursuing careers in healthcare epidemiology and public health. He served as lead medical epidemiologist for congregate residential settings in New York City's emergency response to COVID-19 with a particular focus on long-term care facilities. He continues his work in surveillance, response, and capacity building as Medical Director of Viral Hepatitis at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
