George E. Nelson, MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases. He completed internal medicine residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) and infectious diseases fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He served as Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer in the Respiratory Diseases Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with focus on antibiotic use, bacterial infections, and outbreak investigations. Dr. Nelson’s major scientific interest focuses on antimicrobial stewardship (AS), antimicrobial resistance and appropriate antibiotic use. He serves as the Director of VUMC Antimicrobial Stewardship Program which was recently named an IDSA Center of Excellence. Additionally, he serves as Associate Epidemiologist for VUMC. He has served on the antimicrobial stewardship advisory committee for SHEA and continues to participate on regional collaboratives and committees with the Tennessee Department of Health. He has co-authored chapters in SHEA AS textbook and Principles and Practice of Infectious Diseases. He has been and invited speak locally and nationally and co-authored more than 40 publications appearing in Clinical Infectious Diseases, Emerging Infectious Diseases, The Journal of the American Medical Association, Vaccine, Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology, and The Lancet Global Health among others. He is currently conducting AS studies to improve patient outcomes and reduce patient harms.
