Dr. Katharine Bar is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the director of the Virology Core of the Penn Center for AIDS Research. As a translational physician-scientist, her molecular virology laboratory studies the basic mechanisms of virus transmission, pathogenesis and persistence of HIV-1 within novel nonhuman primate (NHP) models and curated clinical cohorts. Her current research program aims to delineate the mechanisms of HIV persistence to inform therapy and cure strategies. Dr. Bar also has leadership roles in HIV clinical trials groups (eg, the ACTG and HVTN), and is on the protocol teams for several trials testing the role of broadly neutralizing antibodies for HIV prevention, therapy and cure.
