Carlos E. F. Starling, MD, MSC, is the director of the Department of Hospital Epidemiology at the following hospitals in Belo Horizonte, Brazil: Vera Cruz Hospital, Hospital Lifecenter, Fundação Beijamim Guimarães(Baleia Hospital), coordinating a team of hospital epidemiologists, infectologists, nurses, pharmacists and statisticians serving at these institutions. He is also the Director of Infection Control LTDA that assists for 33 years as a consortium several private, public and philanthropic hospitals from Belo Horizonte Metropolitan area, from Brazil.
He graduated in medicine at the Minas Gerais Federal University Medical College. As an undergraduate, he obtained a five year scolarship for Science Iniciation from the Brazilian National Research Council (CNPQ), developing several studies in Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases. He completed Medical Residency in Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the UFMG Clinical Hospital obtaining his Masters degree in Medicine from the São Francisco Cardiovascular Foundation. He trained in Nosocomial Infection Control at the National Cancer Institute - Rio de Janeiro, obtaining the title of Specialist in Infectious Diseases from the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases. He then took a fellowhip at Freiburg University, Germany (Prof. Franz Daschner) in 1991.
He has been working actively since 1985 promoting infection control and hospital epidemiology activities at a local, state, national and international level, organizing, teaching and doing research on infection control in Brazil and other South American countries. He founded and was president of the Minas Gerais Association for Infection Control (AMECIH) and is a founding member of the Brazilian Association for Infection Control (ABIH).
Actually, Dr Starling is Director of Minas Gerais Society of Infectious Diseases and International relationship of Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases and works as a Principal Investigator in several clinical protocols.
