Victor Asensi MD, PhD is an Infectious Diseases especialist and Full Professor of Medicine working at the Hospital Universitario Central de Asturias (HUCA). Prof. Asensi studied Medicine at Oviedo University (1974-80) and completed his Residency at the HUCA (1982-85). He obtained his PhD degree from Oviedo University (1985).
Prof. Asensi is former Immunology Fellow and Japanese Government grantee at Kyushu University, Japan (1985-87) and Infectious Diseases Fellow and Fulbright grantee at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) (1988-90).
The HUCA is a third-level 900 beds academic hospital, and the teaching hospital of Oviedo Univ. Sch. Medicine, in Oviedo, Northwest Spain. Prof. Asensi attends adult patients with all types of infection admitted to the HUCA and follows them at the HUCA Infectious Diseases Outpatient Clinic after hospital discharge. He directly prescribes antimicrobials for all of them. Prof. Asensi follows directly at the HUCA HIV Outpatients Clinic 500 HIV-infected adults and prescribes their antiretroviral therapy.
His main fields of interest are HIV, Central Nervous System (CNS), and osteo-articular HIV infections. Prof. Asensi is author or coauthor of 177 papers published in international journals on different infections, 93 on HIV until September 12, 2022. He has a h-index of 22, with 2,347 citations of his papers (without self-citations) and a mean of 13.8 cites/article until September 12, 2022.
Prof. Asensi has been principal investigator of different Spain-funded research projects on HIV and other infections and Immunology. He has been for 3 terms a member of the Panel that elaborates the Spanish HIV Therapy Guidelines. Prof. Asensi is a member of the Infectious Diseases Antimicrobial Panel of the HUCA Hospital , Oviedo since 2013
