Rick Hengel, MD completed a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Science from the University of Alberta, Canada, in 1986 and a medical doctor degree from the University of Alberta, Canada, in 1988. He then completed his internship at St. Thomas Medical Center 1989 and Internal Medicine residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation 1994. Finally, Dr Hengel completed his Infectious Diseases fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine and combined research fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 1998. He is board certified in Infectious Diseases.
Dr. Hengel was Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Georgetown University Medical School’s Division of Infectious Diseases 1998-2004, and a Medical Officer/Senior Investigator for the National Institutes of Health, NIAID/LIR/CMRS 1998-2004. While at the National Institutes of Health, Dr Hengel helped establish an HIV research facility at the Universite de Bamako in Mali, West Africa.
Dr. Hengel joined Atlanta ID Group in 2004 as a Partner and actively sees patients in the hospital and the office for general infectious diseases, HIV and other immune disorders. He also participates in clinical trial and outcomes research, with significant contributions, presentations and publications in treatment of C. difficile infections and OPAT.
During the months of January and February 2015, Dr. Hengel worked with Partners in Health in Liberia, West Africa on the Ebola virus crisis. He received the Jack A. Raines Humanitarian Award for 2015 from the Medical Association of Georgia.
