Dr. Fritsche received the MS and PhD degrees in zoology and the MD degree at the University of Minnesota followed by residency and fellowship training at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is board-certified in Clinical Pathology (ABP) and Clinical Microbiology (ABMM) and spent 19 years on the faculty of the Departments of Laboratory Medicine, Microbiology, and Ophthalmology at the University of Washington Medical Center, serving until 2003 as Clinical Microbiology Division Head and Director of the Postdoctoral Training Program in Clinical Microbiology. Dr. Fritsche subsequently served as Director of Clinical Laboratories for JMI Laboratories, a clinical microbiology reference laboratory and consulting group. He is recognized for expertise in diagnostic and clinical microbiology, parasitology, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing; and has served on various committees of the College of American Pathologists, American Society of Clinical Pathologists, Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute, American Board of Pathology, American Society for Microbiology and the American Academy of Microbiology. Dr. Fritsche has authored 198 peer-reviewed publications and 29 book chapters among other publications, and several computer software programs on clinical microbiology and infectious disease topics. He has served as a section editor for the Manual of Clinical Microbiology 6th Ed., as Associate Editor for Diagnostic Microbiology and Infectious Disease and for Current Microbiology, and is currently on the editorial boards of Journal of Chemotherapy, Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Journal of Agromedicine. Dr. Fritsche serves as Director of the Division of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, and as section head for Clinical Microbiology at the Marshfield Clinic.
