Dr. Amina Ahmed is the Chief of Pediatric Infectious Disease and Immunology as well as the Director of Hospital Epidemiology at Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. She attended college at Duke University and medical school at the University of North Carolina School, where she also completed her residency in pediatrics. Dr. Ahmed completed fellowship in pediatric infectious disease at University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, under the mentorship of Dr. George McCracken. She has practiced at Levine Children's Hospital for almost 25 years. Dr. Ahmed previously served as Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Pediatrics. Her own clinical and research interests include tuberculosis and congenital viral infections. She has served as site principal investigator (PI) for multiple trials through the NIH-sponsored Collaborative Antiviral Study Group which included studies on the treatment of symptomatic cytomegalovirus (CMV) with ganciclovir and valganciclovir. She was also the site PI for the multicenter Congenital CMV & Hearing Multicenter Screening (CHIMES) Study, a trial enrolling 100,000 newborns across 7 sites in the United States. The objectives of CHIMES included determining the incidence of congenital CMV and describing its role in childhood hearing loss and whether or not it would be advantageous to screen all newborns for CMV infection at birth. Dr. Ahmed has also participated in CDC-sponsored Tuberculosis Trials Consortium and Tuberculosis Epidemiological Studies Consortium. Through her collaborations, Dr. Ahmed has contributed to multiple landmark publications in the field of pediatric infectious disease, including those evaluating role of antiviral treatment of congenital CMV. She has been recognized with several teaching awards, by the North Carolina American Academy of Pediatrics Chapter with the Denny, Katz, Simon, Tingelstad Academic Service Award and by her local institution with the Pinnacle Award, the highest award bestowed upon an employee.
