I am a Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine and Professor of Molecular Virology and Microbiology at the Baylor College of Medicine and have spent my entir professional career at the VA Hospital in Houston. I love clinical medicine -- providing care for patients, teaching, and raising questions about diseases that i see every day. This is the basis for any research that i have done. Some is clinical -- case series, descriptions of diseases, observations on complications or unusual features -- and some is laborarory. I used animal models to demonstrate the role of T cell immunity in syphils, bactericidal and opsonizing stuides to show that Haemophilus influenzae is a common cause of pneumonia in adults. developed the currently used ELISA for antibody to pneumococcal capsular because the previous radioimmunoassay clearly gave erroneous results, etc. All in all, i have coauthored about 560 publications in refereed journals and textbooks. I am active in civic organizations, mainly in the Jewish community and the musical world in Houston, and I try to play string quartets and read one novel every week. My wife and I had veen married for 52 years and we are blessed with a warm and close family.
