Alyssa Castillo, MD - 2nd year fellow in Infectious Diseases at the University of Washington
I completed my residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, where I subsequently worked as an academic hospitalist and served as Chief Resident. In these roles, I developed a passion for medical education, multidisciplinary collaboration, and patient quality and safety. I quickly noticed that the disciplines of infection prevention and control (IPC) and antimicrobial stewardship (AS) provided a perfect opportunity to meld these academic interests and thus pursued fellowship training in Infectious Diseases. As a senior fellow, I am working with the IPC team at Harborview Medical Center (HMC)—a safety net, Level 1 trauma/burn county hospital that is part of the UW Medicine system. In this role, I am embedded in the daily activity of our hospital’s COVID-19 response, collaborate with Employee Health to manage occupational infectious exposures, participate in healthcare-associated infection outbreak investigations, and conduct research focused on diagnostic stewardship of urine cultures to help reduce rates of treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria.
