After more than a decade as a hospital-based pediatric infectious disease physician and medical epidemiologist in public health, Dr. Daskalaki joined Princeton University in the inaugural role of Global and Community Health Physician. In this role, she is responsible for developing outbreak surveillance systems, establishing infection prevention protocols, overseeing the travel health program, and formulating immunization policy. During the pandemic, Dr. Daskalaki has advised on risk mitigation efforts, led the public health response (including forming a new team on contact tracing and creating population screening testing protocols), educated the campus community, and helped establish a new clinical lab on campus. In her work, she has applied accumulated clinical knowledge and experience to formulating public health policy focusing on diversity, inclusion, and health equity. She has also been an active member of the New Jersey Immunization Network, planning its annual conference and providing perspective on the challenges of adult immunizations in the college environment. Dr Daskalaki’s wide-ranging experiences, from hospital-based pediatric infectious disease consultant, to medical epidemiologist and university health leader, afford her a unique perspective on communication, education, and policy making, whether during crises with imminent goals or trying to effect durable behavior change.
Dr. Irini Daskalaki received her medical degree from the University of Athens Medical School, completed her pediatrics residency training at Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center, and her pediatrics infectious diseases fellowship at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.
