For the last 16 years, I have worked as a clinical researcher in the field of Infectious Diseases with the Infectious Disease Clinical Research Program/Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. During this time I have served as prinicipal investigator on both clinical trials and cohort studies. My reserach interesst are primarily in 3 different areas, Care of the HIV infected person, Sexually Transmitted Disease and Invasive Fungal Infections. I work at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center where I am involved in the care and treatment of all infectious diseases including HIV. Using data from the US Miitary Natural History Study [NHS], a cohort comprised of HIV infected Department of Defense beneficiaries, I have examined the epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections (STI) to include incidence, prevalence and testing rates for gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis in the NHS. In a series of analysis we have examined treatment responses to syphilis and have demonstrated that a single dose of benzathiane penicillin is sufficient for the treatment of early syphilis infections (primary, secondary, early latent) in HIV-infected persons. I am involved in comparisons of STIs in HIV infected and HIV uninfected persons on Pre Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and I am involved in a collaboration examining the molecular epidemiology of chlamydia trachomatis infections. I have been involved in clinical trials that examine therapeutic agents to modulate the chronic immune activation observed in HIV infected persons and have examined the role of immune activation in the pathogenesis of HIV associated malignancies. I am currently very interested in examining the role of low level viremia in HIV infected persons, which we have shown is associated with treatment failure and with the current covid19 pandemic my efforts have shifted and I am involved in both natural history studies and treatment trials for COVID19.
