Christina Nelson is a Medical Epidemiologist in the Division of Vector-Borne Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Fort Collins, Colorado. Dr. Nelson received her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University then completed residency in pediatrics and an MPH in epidemiology at the University of Colorado. Prior to joining CDC, she lived in Peru and studied viral encephalitis as an NIH Fogarty International Clinical Research Fellow. Dr. Nelson is board certified in both pediatrics and preventive medicine.
In her current role with CDC, Dr. Nelson specializes in vector-borne bacterial diseases including plague, Bartonella infections, tularemia, Lyme disease, and tick-borne relapsing fever. She conducts research, surveillance, and consultation services as a subject matter expert on these diseases. She also develops and reviews evidence-based guidelines and informational materials for both health care providers and the public. She has published >50 peer-reviewed journal articles on vector-borne diseases and reviewed or authored chapters for the Red Book, Yellow Book, and Control of Communicable Diseases Manual. Dr. Nelson has also deployed for CDC’s Emergency Operations Center for the Zika virus and COVID-19 public health responses.
