Dr Akiho Sugita is a PGY-3 resident of the Disease Control and Prevention Center (DCC) at the National Center for Global Health and Medicine (NCGM) hospital in Tokyo. Dr Sugita graduated magna cum laude from Chiba University in 2020. She was awarded a scholarship in 2021, and completed one of the modules on distance learning Master of Public Health (MPH) course at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. She has been providing care for many infectious disease patients including COVID-19 patients.
She has experience in several fields of epidemiological studies, evidenced by her study on the in utero environment and changes in fetal umbilical cord DNA methylation during medical school. She also attended a short-term research program at the Harvard School of Public Health, and published an article on the relationship between cultural engagement and incidence of cognitive Impairment.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she supported global research and surveillance for a joint report by the NCGM President and Director concerning ‘Hospital capacity during the COVID-19 pandemic’.
Her most recent area of research project is the clinical prognostic value of neutralizing antibody therapy and cytokines in COVID-19 patients. Additional areas of interest include the interface of infectious diseases, geriatrics, and antimicrobial stewardship.
As a member of the NCGM team that is leading the treatment of infectious diseases, she aspires to contribute worldwide through clinical practice and research.
For your information, she is also a certificated weather forecaster and a scuba diver.
