Dr. Joel V. Chua is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Institute of Human Virology, University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Chua is the Chief of Surgical Infectious Diseases at the University of Maryland Medical Center. His clinical and teaching focus is in surgical infectious disease that includes care of patients with osteomyelitis, vascular graft infections, ventriculitis, intraabdominal infections, empyema, and postsurgical infections.
Dr.. Chua's principal research interest revolves developing novel antiviral for the treatment of neglected and emerging viruses of global importance with particular interest in dengue viral infections. His current work and efforts have been dedicated to developing first-in-human dengue challenge model to support critical vaccine and antiviral development as well as understanding immune correlates of protection against this virus. His fledging dengue virology and immunology lab at the Institute is currently developing humanized mice model as a platform for evaluating dengue antivirals and for understanding the immunopathogenesis of this viral infection.
