Hello, my name is Andrew Cox, and I am a fellow in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. I am interested in viral vaccinology and aim to be a pediatrician scientist researching ways to improve viral vaccines. I completed my MD/PhD dual degree at the University of Rochester in 2018 and my accelerated research pathway residency in pediatrics at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in 2020. My doctoral thesis focused on manipulating the basic virology of Influenza A virus to create novel attenuated vaccine candidates and resulted in two patents and multiple publications. I am passionate about continuing to create new respiratory viral vaccine candidates in my future work. To ensure protected time to broaden my understanding of viral immunology, I applied for and received positions within both the Pediatrician Scientist Development Program (K12) and the Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Consortium mentorship program. This provides two years of fully protected research time which has allowed the challenge of multiple complex projects. My fellowship research in the lab of Stephen Waggoner focuses on two aspects of the immune response. The first is on ways to improve vaccine efficacy through novel manipulation of germinal center responses. The second is on the importance of genetic variation within the host and how this impacts differential vaccine effectiveness depending on vaccine platform and adjuvant. My combined training will position me to continue research in viral vaccinology with an eye to the future of bringing vaccines into the field of personalized medicine.
