I am Dr. Almira Uy from Manila, Philippines. I finished my training as an Infectious Disease and Tropical Medicine specialist at St. Luke's Medical Center, Philippines. In my two years of training as ID specialist, I have encountered varying cases of emerging infections and endemic infections in our country such as tuberculosis, dengue fever, leptospirosis, to name a few.
Special to my fellowship training was that we dove into Infectious Diseases during the rise, peak and subsequent plateau of the COVID-19 pandemic. I have experienced utilizing investigational therapy for COVID-19 which the current guidelines may no longer recommend today. One of the greatest challenges we have faced during the COVID-19 pandemic was the significant delay of the delivery of the COVID-19 vaccines to our country and the particularly limited supply, along with the obvious hesitancy toward vaccination among my countrymen.
