Dr Sema Mandal is a medical consultant in public health and epidemiology in the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) (formerly Public Health England) since 2013, where she is the Head of Hepatitis in the national team.
In her current position at UKHSA, Dr Mandal leads the public health functions for hepatitis A to D: monitoring progress towards elimination of viral hepatitis, enhancing surveillance capabilities, evaluating case-finding and engagement in care interventions, developing guidance, providing expert advice and outbreak response. The latter included co-leading the epidemiological investigation into acute hepatitis of unknown aetiology in children - this was a national high profile incident earlier this year.
Sema also leads on hepatitis immunisation programmes – including the introduction of hepatitis B universal infant immunisation into the UK schedule in 2017.
She has published extensively, has a diverse research portfolio, and has honorary senior lecturer positions at UCL and University of Bristol.
She is an expert advisor to the Viral Hepatitis Prevention Board at University of Antwerp and a member of the WHO Strategic Advisory Group of Experts - Working Group on hepatitis A immunisation.
Sema has also previously worked on vaccine preventable diseases at CDC as an EIS Fellow and staff epidemiologist in NCIRD, and also at WHO HQ working on the Guinea Ebola vaccine trial.
Before pursuing a career in public health, Sema worked in London, UK in adult internal medicine (board certified) and in emergency medicine in UK and Australia. She also gained a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene at LSMTH and subsequently volunteered as a field doctor for Medicins sans Frontieres in South Sudan supporting primary care clinics and a paediatric ward in a district hospital.
