Dr. Barbee is an infectious disease physician whose work intersects the clinical, research and public health aspects of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Her main focus has been on antimicrobial resistant (AMR) gonorrhea (GC) and novel treatments. In this area she has conducted several clinical trials to repurpose existing drugs for AMR GC. She was also the lead SME for the CDC's 2021 Gonorrhea Treatment Recommendations.
Dr. Barbee completed her undergraduate work in Art History at Northwestern University. She then served as a community health volunteer in the Peace Corps in Nicaragua She completed medical school at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and a masters in public health at the University of Michigan. Dr. Barbee moved to Seattle, Washington for internal medicine residency at the University of Washington where she also completed an infectious diseases fellowship. At the University of Washington, Dr. Barbee was an Associate Professor and had a joint appointment with Public Health -- Seattle & King County where she was the Deputy Director of the HIV/STD Program and Medical Director of the Sexual Health Clinic until September 2022. Dr. Barbee recently joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as the Clinical Team Lead for the Divsion of STD Prevention.
