Associate Professor of Medicine
University of California, Los Angeles, CA, United States
Dr. Priya Uppuluri is an Associate Professor of Infectious Diseases at the David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California at Los Angeles. Priya received her PhD from Texas Tech University where she started her career investigating pathogenesis of fungal diseases. Her publications were some of the first in the field to highlight the importance of Candida albicans biofilms and their serious impact on hospitalized patients. She did her postdoctoral training with Dr. Joseph Heitman at Duke University and Dr. Jose Lopez-Ribot at University of Texas at San Antonio, and presently her lab is situated at The Lundquist Institute at Harbor-UCLA, where her group focuses on Candida pathogenesis in various animal models. Her lab is at the forefront of discovering the molecular signals underlying biofilm growth and dispersal, and identifying new classes of antifungal molecules as well as immunotherapeutics to curb the scourge of diseases such as neonatal candidiasis, catheter associated candidiasis, and hospital acquired infections including Gram negative bacteria. She is the recipient of several NIH funded grants and has published many high impact papers in the field. She is overjoyed to speak today and proudly represents the illustrious Harbor-UCLA mycology unit that undertakes groundbreaking translational research in medical mycology.
