Trauma and General Surgeon/Critical Care Intensivist

Nelayda Fonte DO FACOS FICS is a graduate of UMDNJ-SOM (Rowan). After completing a general surgery residency program at Kennedy Memorial Hospital, she completed a TRAUMA/ Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Cooper Hospital in Camden, NJ. Dr Fonte stayed at this Level 1 trauma center as an attending trauma surgeon for a year and then moved to Ft Myers ,Florida where Lee Memorial Hospital had just received its Level 2 trauma center designation. She found her home in the sunny shores of the Gulf Coast where she has remained for over 20 years. She held the position of Assistant Director of Trauma, Chief of Surgery, and Past President of the Medical Staff. Holding positions in multiple committees including Trauma Multidisciplinary and Morbidity & Mortality Reviews, Credentialling, Physician/Hospital Organization Operating Committee and PHO credentialing, LMHS Surgical Council, LMHS Medical Executive Committee, and facilitating surgical chart reviews for the QI committee. She is also actively involved in community outreach and trauma prevention programs sponsored by her trauma department as well as local law enforcement, media, and academic centers, ranging from preschool to the collegiate level, as well as programs geared to trauma prevention in the elderly. Dr Fonte has served in an advisory role to organizations like " Just Drive/ Stay Alive" , Coalition for a Drug Free Southwest Florida, As well the LifeLink organ procurement organization in her area. Staying close to her Osteopathic Surgical roots, she has been actively involved with the ACOS through committe membership including Nomination Committee,Awards Committee, and the In Depth Review Committee. She has lectured at the ACA, cochaired IDR conference, and had the pleasure of cochairing the ACA in Phoenix, AZ. she has mow tranditioned to a hibrid practice combining General Surgery with Critical Care and providing Covid Care nationally during the pandemic.
Dr Fonte has been married for 25 years and has two daughters, ages 18and 19, who make her proud everyday.
