Joe is the Head of Safety Epidemiology at AstraZeneca, based in Cambridge UK, leading the team of pharmacoepidemiologists accountable for designing and conducting post-authorisation safety studies across the AZ Biopharmaceuticals portfolio, including the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID vaccine. Prior to his current role, he led the team of health data scientists at AstraZeneca, who applied modern statistics and AI to large electronic healthcare data, with the goal of improving the probability of success and reducing the cost of clinical trials. Prior to AstraZeneca, he was the Head of Data Science at IQVIA, a global healthcare consultancy in London UK, where he founded the team that successfully delivered over 250 retrospective database studies during his time in role. He also held positions in epidemiology at Roche and Amgen, after having held academic posts in the US, UK and Sweden. Joe is currently an honorary Associate Professor at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and the UCL School of Pharmacy, where he supports various teaching and research projects in health data science and pharmacoepidemiology. Joe was elected to the Royal Statistical Society as a Fellow and Chartered Statistician in 2005.
