Anne Trontell, MD, MPH, is an Associate Director in the Clinical Effectiveness and Decision Science Program at the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) where she provides leadership of PCORI’s Clinical Trials Advisory Panel and of PCORI’s portfolio of large pragmatic clinical trials to compare the effectiveness and safety of alternative healthcare interventions. Her current work extends and enlarges her previous oversight activities in pragmatic clinical trials funded by the Agency or Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) as the Clinical and Health Outcomes Initiative in Comparative Effectiveness and resulting in multiple scientific publications, including two in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Dr. Trontell is a general pediatrician, pharmacoepidemiologist, and health services researcher with diverse research and management experience at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the US Health Care Financing Administration (now the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.) At FDA, she conducted preapproval reviews and also directed drug safety, risk communication, adverse event reporting, and risk management activities, including leadership of the original FDA Guidance on Risk Management that established RiskMAPs, ETASUs, and other REMS-related activities. At AHRQ, she was the Program Director for the Centers for Education and Research on Therapeutics.
Dr. Trontell trained in general pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital and is a retired Captain in the US Public Health Service. Her undergraduate degree is from Princeton University, her MD from the University of Pennsylvania, her MPH in health policy and management from the Harvard School of Public Health. She is a former CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer.
