Stephen Kimmel, MD, MSCE is currently Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine; Director of the Division of Epidemiology in the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Informatics; and Director of the Clinical Epidemiology Unit in the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He has served in leadership roles in the Division of Epidemiology for the past 14 years, focused on the growth and nurturing of a large program of research and education. He is also founding director of the Center for Therapeutic Effectiveness Research at the Penn School of Medicine whose mission is to improve the effectiveness of existing therapeutics through clinical research. His research, which has been funded continuously for the past 25 years, focuses on improving the use of existing medical therapies, particularly related to genetic epidemiology, adherence, and patient-centered outcomes. He also has been instrumental for the past 22 years in the development and growth of Penn’s Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology, Epidemiology PhD, and Certificate in Clinical Research programs. He teaches an advanced epidemiology course and has served as a primary mentor for 32 trainees. He has received four separate awards in recognition of his teaching and mentoring.
