Gokila Thangavel, Ph.D., Senior Scientist, Kemin Food Technologies.
Gokila heads the Research and Development - Microbiology group in Kemin Food Technologies, head quartered in Des Moines, Iowa. Before moving to the food segment, she was heading the Microbiology function in Kemin Animal Health and Nutrition in India. Gokila holds a PhD in Microbial Biotechnology and has about 17 years of Industrial experience in Research and Development leading new product development in the area of food preservation, antimicrobials, animal feed preservation, animal intestinal health, probiotics, disinfectants and control infectious diseases in animals. She holds a variety of publications including peer review papers, abstracts, presentations and patents.
Her background in animal and food microbiology enables her to lead the product development in her current role serving the different disciplines including baked goods, proteins, fresh produce, plant-based products, dairy, dressings and sauces. Her research work focuses on understanding the microbes in food, factors that affect their growth, the microbiome interaction and to develop robust products to extend the shelf life of the finished products. She works in collaboration with the customer and the internal team to understand the specific requirements and to develop efficient and cost-effective solution. Her current research efforts are concentrated on the development of clean-label antimicrobials to control pathogens and spoilage microbes that are of concern in the food industry.
