SCOTT CALVERT BIO
Scott started in the hospitality industry at the age of eighteen. Several years later he decided to attend the New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, Vermont, where he realized baking was his passion.
His first role after school was at the Hotel Boulderado in Boulder, Colorado, learning from and working with the pastry chef there. He also moonlighted at a three-unit, family-run, Mediterranean/Italian restaurant, to gain more knowledge of how the restaurant industry works.
Scott returned to Austin and became the pastry chef at Motorola in the mid-90’s, where he gained experience working with a large corporate kitchen, and had opportunities to travel and compete on the Motorola culinary team.
While working at Moto, he started designing and baking wedding cakes on the weekends for friends and Austin event coordinators. Seeing the demand in Austin for high-end custom wedding and event cakes, he opened his first bakery, Countryside Baking Company, in 1996.
Two years later, Scott decided to devote himself full-time to building his business and left Motorola. He renamed his business, built a new, larger bakery and The Cake Plate was born.
After 23 years in continuous operation, he joined forces with Tootie Pie Co. in a new, even larger bakery just west of Austin, where he directs the sales and operations teams. And he still finds time to join the team in the kitchen to test new desserts and decorate a cake or two!
