Ashley M. Ruiz PhD, RN is a Doctorate of Philosophy in Nursing, and current Presidential Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Arizona State University, whose research centers the voices of Black women often excluded from being provided protection from sexual violence. She seeks to incorporate anti-oppressive practices into current and future nursing education, research, and policy to best create a cultural paradigm shift that supports women’s healing trajectories, and ultimately could also prevent the occurrence of sexual assault against Black women within the communities of which they are a part. As a former Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, her prior experiences in nursing practice have informed her identification of gaps where healthcare providers failed to address the needs of patients who had experienced violence. Based on this experience, Ashley began to pursue a doctoral degree through the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee. Her current work focuses on advancing feminist theory in nursing science for the purposes of providing a theoretical foundation for addressing the problem of violence against women, particularly for ethnically diverse populations.
