Addressing Violent Crime Through Public Health and Public Safety Collaborations

Collaboration is critical to violence reduction and should be done with both law enforcement and non-law enforcement stakeholders. This workshop explores how law enforcement agencies partner with public health partners to reduce crime. This panel explores how Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Harris County, Texas implemented public health initiatives to combat violent crime. The Baton Rouge Police Department established the Community Street Team to provide locations where the Navigators, High-Risk Interventionists, and Credible Messengers can use prevention tactics to reduce violent crime in the community. Similarly, Harris County, started Holistic Assistance Response Teams (HART), comprised of social workers, behavioral health and medical professionals who that seek to interrupt gun violence and provide resources.
