Sam Hoyle joined the New Zealand Police in 1985. During his 37-year career, he has held a number of major operational, command and management roles, and has also been deployed overseas. Most recently, Sam served as the Senior Liaison Officer for the USA, Canada and South America, and has recently been promoted to the role of Assistant Commissioner Tamaki Makaurau, (Auckland). An operational command running a region encompassing New Zealand’s largest city and around 3300 staff. Prior to this he was Acting Assistant Commissioner: Intelligence. In this role, he led the NZ Police National Intelligence Centre and the Evidence-Based Policing Centre. He also has several national roles on the Senior Leadership Team, steering committees and executive management boards for transformation programmes. Previously, Sam was the District Commander of Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city. He led a team of approximately 1000 staff in a district that covers 8000 square kilometres and four policing areas. He, in charge of all operational policing and criminal investigations. He also managed the political and operational emergency management relationships within the capital.
