Gabe Lira - Born and raised in southern California. In 1986 I entered the Marine Corp. Upon leaving the Marine Corp I was hired by the Hawthorne Police Dept. During my time with Hawthorne PD I held a variety of assignments to include being a member of our bike team, A school resource officer (SRO), two separate tours as a Field Training Officer, 11 years on the SWAT team, 10 years supervising our civil unrest team, Narcotics detective with K-9, Jail Supervisor, Narcotics unit supervisor, and Patrol supervisor.
In 2011 I started the departments first ever Peer Support Team. During my time as team coordinator I have responded to numerous critical incidents in LA, Orange and San Bernardino Counties. I also co-created a regional peer support chat thread which developed into a regional peer support response coalition. I am also one of the founding members of the Public Safety Peer Support Association (PSPSA) and I am a current committee member for the annual conference. In August of 2022 I retired from Hawthorne PD. I now spend my time traveling central and Southern California building and training Peer Support teams and building wellness programs for first responder agencies.
