Jaswant Lal joined the Police Division’s Strategic Policy, Planning and Development Section in 2008 having served in the Fiji Police Force for 26 years where, amongst others, he was the Commissioner’s policy adviser, and planning officer. In the UN Police Division, he has served as the Criminal Investigations Adviser, as Police Planning Officer and head of the Police Planning Unit, as Policy Coordination Officer and Deputy Section Chief. Jaswant has worked on supporting most, if not, all Peacekeeping operations, Special Political Missions, and UN police deployments to non-mission settings. He has served in several task forces, including the review of UN Policing (2008), improving peacekeepers safety and security, peacekeeping performance, assessment, and planning reviews, and more recently, on the UN Police Training Architecture. As a key member of the team developing guidance under the Strategic Guidance Framework for International Policing (SGF), Mr. Lal’s contributions to SGF include being the lead on several guidance on police planning, individual officers and formed units’ performance assessments and evaluations, as well as peer-reviewing new guidance as well as the curriculum produced under the UN Police Training Architecture.
Jaswant now serves as the Officer-in-charge of the Strategic Policy, Planning and Development Section in the UN Police Division within the Department of Peace Operations.
Jaswant Lal holds a Master’s degree in Information Systems, post graduate qualifications in legislative drafting, and graduate certificate in applied police management from the Australian Institute of Police Management. He speaks English, Fijian, Urdu, and Hindi.
