Chief Ryan Lee served almost 20 years in the Police Bureau in Portland, Oregon retiring as an Assistant Chief of Police. He has a background in homeland security, terrorism and intelligence. He also helped instruct ethics at the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training and was an adjunct college professor. He was selected to lead the Boise Police Department in July 2020.
Chief Lee is a national subject matter expert in policing large-scale events and public order policing. He conducted overseas research on these topics for the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and presented on these topics widely, including at the IACP Annual Conference and at an international symposium at the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Headquarters. He continues to work with NIJ, serving on a Special Technical Committee to develop training and equipment standards.
Chief Lee is a veteran of the Coast Guard, has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from California State University at Sacramento and holds a Master of Criminal Justice Degree from Boston University. He is a graduate of the Major Cities Chiefs Association’s Police Executive Leadership Institute.
